Forest School

Our Outdoor Classroom
Forest Schools originated in Scandinavia in the 1950’s and were built around the importance of outdoor education in enabling the holistic development of every child. What makes Forest Schools different from other styles of outdoor learning is the importance placed on children’s natural curiosity, independence, risk taking and at the centre of all this, their self-esteem.
Forest Schools are based on a child-led approach to learning which enables children to feel empowered by allowing them to take ownership of their own learning.  It has been built on the premise of providing children with the opportunity to learn through real life experiences which are relevant to them.
Old Church has a well established ‘Forest School’ with three qualified Forest School leaders. This year we will be continuing to embed Forest School sessions into the curriculum; providing all children with the opportunity to attend at least two weeks’ worth of sessions.
This is a fantastic opportunity for our children as they will be learning many skills that cannot be taught in a classroom. The Forest School approach is now being used in many schools across the country and has been praised for the positive effect it has had on children’s development and learning in all areas of the curriculum.
These sessions will be outdoors, so we ask that when your child is selected you ensure that they are dressed appropriately for the weather
Your child will need:
  • A complete change of clothes; this includes socks and underwear
  • Wellington boots
  • Gloves (not mittens)
  • Hat and scarf
The school will provide all weather suits to ensure that the children are kept dry in all conditions.
We hope that your child will enjoy attending these sessions and that they will be eager to share their experiences with you.
Forest School Leaders: Billy, Lizzy and Lydia.
